Overview
A Marriage Certificate is an official declaration that states that two people are legally married. In 2006, the Supreme Court had made it mandatory for all marriages to be legalized through issue of Marriage Certificates for the special purpose of safeguarding women's rights. This certificate is essential for the purposes of applying for Passports and opening of bank accounts with an new surname post marriage as well as for laying a legal claim to benefits and property of one's spouse.
Eligibility Criteria
The couple must meet the statutory norms pertaining to age to be certified as a legally married couple. For reference, the minimum marriageable age for the bride is 18 years and it is 21 years for the bridegroom.
Documents Required
The following documents are required along with the application for Marriage Certificate:
- Joint photo of the couple
- Marriage invitation copy/Any other proof of marriage solemnization
- Address proof
- Age proof
- Three witnesses each for the bride and the bridegroom
Procedure
The applicants must approach the Magistracy Branch, DC's Office, Haflong and apply for the same in a prescribed format along with all the relevant documents as listed in the preceding paragraph.
